The volume is labelled on the spine ‘Balfour`s collections on the shires’, and is inscribed ‘Vol:3.’ in a seventeenth-century hand on folio 5.The main text is preceded by a contents list (folio 5). Almost all of the entries are undated, but appear to have been written at different times between about 1630 and about 1640, with later additions until at least 1650 (folio 94) and 1654 (folio 321). Scope and Contents
This loose collection of papers belonged to Duncan Campbell, who was born at the farm of Kerrumore, Glenlyon, of which his family had been tenants for three generations. He was editor of the ‘Northern Chronicle’, co-editor of the ‘Highland Monthly’, and author of a number of works relating to Highland history, notably the ‘Book of Garth and Fortingall’. Scope and Contents
Rose`s work was first written in 1683-1684: Shaw`s epitome records also later members of the family until about 1756 (folio 69 verso), with a supplement until about 1772 (folio 83 verso). This copy appears to have been written for the antiquary William Rose in Montcoffer in the same hand as Adv.MS.32.6.8, and has a note inside the front cover, a contents list at folio 1 and a few textual additions in his hand.
