The book of recipes is continued by Anna, Lady Elcho’s daughter Jean, Countess of Sutherland (see her note on folio ii verso), Jean, Viscountess Maitland (see her references to the Countess of Lauderdale as her mother-in-law, folios 73 verso, 77), and others. The earliest section (folio 14) includes a number of mythological coats (for example, those of Cupid and the Nine Worthies) and some of members of the nobility and gentry from 1573 onwards. Many of the later additions are dated between 1630 and 1641. There are a few pedigrees and three indices to the compilation (folios i verso, 82 verso, and 86 verso). According to a statement by Chalmers (folio iv), the original manuscript was in the hands of James Pont in 1593. From him it passed to Joseph Stacey, Ross Herald, Henry Fraser, Ross Herald, and finally to Chalmers, who made this copy before restoring it to the Sinclair family.
