The contents include: letters of James Hogg, 1814, 1820, 1826, 1831, 1835; an unpublished poem, 'The Fall of Idumea', written by him shortly before his death; letters and verses of his literary acquaintances in Scotland and London and his family; information supplied to his daughter and biographer, Mary Garden; portraits of Hogg; and a receipt, 1819, for duty paid by him on 'one work horse', on which someone has written, 'Mr. Hogg has no Horse nor never had one' (folio 333).

Scope and Contents The founder of the family was Gilbert Elliot (1651-1718), a younger son of Gavin Elliot of Midlem Mill. Gilbert Elliot was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in 1688, created a baronet in 1700, and appointed a Lord of Session as Lord Minto in 1705; he acquired the lands of Headshaw in Roxburghshire in 1696, and added Minto to his property in 1703. Scope and Contents Ronald Fairbairn was born in Edinburgh in 1889 and educated at Merchiston Castle School and the Universities of Edinburgh, Manchester, Kiel and Strasbourg. During the First World War he served as a Territorial in the Royal Garrison Artillery with postings in Egypt and Palestine.
