Scope and Contents

Included in the papers are letters, 1831-1849, of Francis Jeffrey, Lord Jeffrey, Senator of the College of Justice, to Cockburn, and some notes, undated, for Jeffrey`s biography.

The legal papers are concerned mainly with trials in which Cockburn appeared as counsel, and consist largely of briefs drawn up for his instruction, copies of the precognitions of witnesses, and some printed material relating to the cases.

The letters are mostly to members of the Fassiefern family, especially to John Cameron of Fassiefern and his son Sir Ewen, 1st Baronet. Also containing some legal documents and business papers. There are also papers pertaining to the Cameron chiefs Sir Ewen and Donald Locheil.

Content Description

A collection of 55 documents bound into a large volume, ca. 1900, where they are mostly mounted onto the pages. Items 1-29 are legal documents; 30-40 concern early 17th-century family matters; 41-50 concern domestic Scottish affairs during the reign of Charles I, and 51-55 relate to events in the reign of Charles II.

A list of the documents is kept with the volume.

Most of the letters and memorandums, 1785-1794 are from the Earl of Mar, addressed apparently to the Earl of Seaforth (folios 13-67).

Also included are notes and copies of opinions, 1761-1820, on the succession to five peerages attainted in the 1715 and 1745 risings (folios 68-137), and miscellaneous notes, undated, on peerages (folios 1-12).

Strowan`s own letters mostly concern his financial and legal affairs, but among those addressed to him are some from the Earl of Mar, written during and after the Rising of 1715, and from John Hay, Duke of Inverness. The papers also concern Strowan`s part in the Rising, and the pardon granted to him in 1731.
