Scope and Contents The speech was delivered by Sir William Murrie at a dinner to celebrate his 80th birthday arranged by the Heads of Department in the Scottish Office, held at the Caledonian Hotel, Edinburgh. It contains an account of life in the Scottish Office during the interwar period, when it was based in Dover House, Whitehall, London. A covering note by Peter Mackay with biographical profiles of figures mentioned in the text, including Sir Douglas Haddow, Sir Charles Cunningham, Sir William Kerr...

The documents transcribed are dated between 1438 and 1681: most are of the 16th century. They relate to ecclesiastical antiquities and in particular to the Carmelites and their convent at "Innerbervie", i.e. Bervie, Kincardineshire. The transcripts are written on paper watermarked 1813: possibly it was the making of these transcripts that prompted the compilation of the inventory by the family about 1820 (cf. ‘Scots Peerage’, volume i, page 272).

Dates: 1438-1681.

Transcripts, chiefly, of letters and papers of Sir Hew Campbell of Cessnock and his descendants, and of a few other letters, all of which seem to be connected with the Hamiltons of Silvertonhill.

Scope and Contents These thick manuscript volumes were written by three clerks (James Connell, Evander McLeod and another) under the supervision of the Reverend Dr John MacLeod of Dundonald. They were part of the final draft of the Highland Society of Scotland Dictionary, and were transcribed between June 1822 and June 1823 from materials prepared by MacLeod and Ewen MacLachlan (see below).
