The Nisbet papers fall into four groups, belonging respectively to the Nisbets of that Ilk, the original owners of the estate; the Kers (later Carres) of Cavers and West Nisbet; who acquired the estate in 1649; the Chisholmes of that Ilk, connected by marriage to Charles St Clair, 15th Lord Sinclair, who succeeded to the estate some time before 1813; and William Molleson, probably related to the sister of Charles St Clair, de jure 13th Lord Sinclair.

Dates: 1735-1736.

Scope and Contents From the Series: Sir David Dalrymple, 3rd Baronet of Hailes, (1726-1792), was the son of Sir James Dalrymple, 2nd Baronet of Hailes, and Lady Christian Dalrymple, daughter of the 6th Earl of Haddington. Sir David was educated at Eton and entered the Inner Temple in 1742. From 1747-1748 he studied Civil Law at Utrecht, and in 1748 was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates. Scope and Contents The notes give a detailed chronological account of the day-to-day treatment and condition of the physician's patients. Numerous diseases are specified, including a severe outbreak of smallpox in the winter of 1733-1734.While these notes occupy the major part of the volume (pages 80-249), pages i-iv and 1-79 contain others by the physician, taken from, or relating to, works in which he was interested. Scope and Contents

The first part (folios 1-17) consists of a case-book giving details of the symptoms, treatment, and daily progress of five patients admitted to the Infirmary. Particulars of another case had been removed before acquisition by this Library. The rest of the volume (folios 19-46) contains a journal kept by David Maule on a voyage from Greenock to British Guiana on the 'Brilliant', 22 February-16 April 1801.
