Scope and Contents From the Fonds:

This collection dates mainly from after 1988, when John McGrath and Elizabeth MacLennan resigned from the company which they had established, with David MacLennan, in 1973. Following the funding crisis in 2006, the company had to leave its base in the STUC building in Glasgow, and it was at this point that much of the material in this accession was presented to the National Library of Scotland.

Scope and Contents From the Sub-Series: The papers chiefly refer to James Stuart's stay in India as an officer (later Commander-in-Chief) of the forces of the East India Company based at Fort St George (Madras). The most detailed portions of the papers cover the year immediately prior to Stuart's dismissal from the Company's service in 1783. Scope and Contents From the Sub-Series: The 2nd Earl of Minto succeeded his cousin, Lord Auckland, on 19 September 1835 and held the office (with renewals of his commission in July 1837 and March 1839) until the fall of the Melbourne ministry in September 1841. Scope and Contents From the Fonds: Auldbar was bought in 1753 by William Chalmers, a Gibraltar merchant whose family had owned land in Aberdeenshire, at Federate and Hazlehead. His father and brother were physicians in Aberdeen, and the papers as arranged below begin with medical records of these men. An important section concerns the trade and administration of Gibraltar in the second quarter of the 18th century, and there is also much mercantile correspondence of the 18th and early 19th centuries.
