Scope and Contents From the Series: The correspondents are political, literary, and clerical celebrities, chiefly English, of the nineteenth century. A number of letters are addressed to Sir Thomas Grainger Stewart, physician, to whom the collection was presented by Mrs Bishop in 1886 (MS.7178, number 1). The correspondents include politicians, artists and figures from the medical and theatrical professions. It probably belonged to Jean Lang, née Blaikie, to whom many of the letters are addressed, but a substantial amount of the correspondence is to William Miller, Member of the Society of Solicitors in the Supreme Courts of Scotland, and the physician, Sir Thomas Lauder-Brunton.

Andrew Rutherfurd was Solicitor-General for Scotland, 1837-1839, and Lord Advocate, 1839-1841 and 1846-1851. The correspondence largely reflects his political and legal concerns, but also shows his interest in literature and the arts.

Warren Hastings journey began and ended in Edinburgh, and among places visited are Stirling, Perth, Loch Tay, Loch Lomond, Loch Long, Glasgow, Paisley, and Lanark. Hastings is shown as a sensitive tourist, responsive to scenery and architecture. He pays special attention to the standard of food and comfort in inns, and gives some space to commercial and economic observations. Little in the journal relates to his public career.
