Correspondence and papers of Alexander 'Jupiter' Carlyle, Minister of Inveresk, and of his trustees and later relations.
Alexander Carlyle's papers consist chiefly of journals, sermons, lectures, autobiographical writings, writings on various topics, poetry and papers on church and other affairs. The later papers (MSS.23927-23930) consist of a list of his books, excerpts from his writings and excerpts of proceedings in the action against him by the Presbytery of Dalkeith.

Christian Dalrymple (1765-1838) was the heiress of Lord Hailes, being his daughter by his first marriage to Anne Brown. Although she inherited the Newhailes estate in 1792, the title passed to her cousin, James Dalrymple, who became 4th Baronet of Hailes. Christian Dalrymple did not marry. Her papers consist largely of family correspondence and her journals which provide a detailed record of her daily life over nearly forty years.

Sir Charles Dalrymple Fergusson (1800-1849), was the eldest son of Sir James Fergusson, 4th Baronet of Kilkerran, and Jean, second daughter of Lord Hailes. He inherited Newhailes in 1838 on the death of his aunt, Christian Dalrymple, when he assumed the additional surname of Dalrymple. Sir Charles was admitted Advocate in 1822, and in 1829 married Helen, daughter of David Boyle of Shewalton, Lord President of the Court of Session.

Warren Hastings Anderson entered the merchant house of his uncle, Robert Anderson and Company, St. Andrew's Square, Edinburgh, in 1813, becoming a partner in 1818. From then until the 1850s he spent most of his life in Italy and France engaged in trade, finally retiring to Bowerhouse near Dunbar. Family, personal and legal material predominates in this collection.

Charles Forrester (1895-1980), a graduate of Heriot Watt College, Edinburgh, was Professor of Chemistry 1926, Vice-Principal 1932 and Principal 1936-1948 of the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad. After his retirement he worked in the Chief Scientist's Division, Minister of Power, 1949-1960, and the British Coal Utilisation Research Association 1960-1963. The papers largely concern Forrester's position as Director of the Indian School of Mines.
