Files contain reseach notes relating to Magnusson's interests, the bulk of which are on Scotland and Iceland. Research notes on Vikings were kept separate by Magnusson.

Bound in in the latter part of the volume is a copy of ‘A dissertation on the origin and progress of the Scythians or Goths’, which also has numerous marginalia by Macpherson. None of the writings is dated, but folios 8 and 15 are written on sheets watermarked 1810 and 1811.

The additions are tipped in at pages 33, 46, 114, 197, 204, 223, 247 and before and in the tables of kings; and at page 53 of the ‘Dissertation …’.

Scope and Contents The journal is made up from transcripts of letters to his mother written on the journey between 26 August and 8 September 1842. The Naval log is illustrated by sketches of ships, scenery, antiquities, etc., and accompanied by several poems and a dissertation on the putrid fever of St Lucia (folio 27). The scenes and incidents described include the West Indies, 1778-1779; Denmark and Zetland, 1780; the loss of the ‘Royal George’, 1782; and the battle of Cape St Vincent.
