Scope Note: Bound collections of autographs, writings, paintings, and drawings collected by the owner from his or her friends and acquaintances. Thought to have developed in German-speaking Europe in the mid-16th century; the custom was spread by students traveling from one university to another. Albums were soon compiled by people other than students, particularly men and women of the bourgeoisie. Albums belonging to members of the nobility usually contained drawings of coats-of-arms.

Scope and Contents The entries include autographs by members of the British and Danish royal families, continental statesmen, nobility and gentry, and Scots travelling or studying in Europe. Many are illustrated with coats of arms. There are a number of paintings depicting personages and scenes, mostly in Padua and Venice; other more imaginative scenes such as a highway robbery and a street battle at night; and some coloured engravings by Ralph Sadeler, Adrien Collaert and others have been inserted....
