Scope Note: Documents relating to the management of all aspects of a landed estate, which is to be considered property of notable extent which may include, as general examples, any of the following: dwellings; outbuildings; grounds; pasturage; arable land; woodland; water courses. Scope and Contents From the Sub-Series: The most important event in this period was the execution, in an attempt to relieve the estate of its burden of debt, of a deed of trust by James Dundas of Dundas (died 1780). This deed (dated 23 February, 1773 but effective from Martinmas, 1772) resulted in the administration of the estate by trustees up to and including crop 1805 (18 August 1806) and, due to the minority of James Dundas of Dundas (died 1881), by curators up to 14 January 1814. Scope and Contents From the Fonds: The papers cover six centuries worth of family and estate papers of the Forbes, the Stuart Forbes, and the Trefusis families. Alexander de Forbes (c.1380-1448) was created the 1st Lord Forbes around 1440, the Lords Forbes of Pitsligo were descended from Sir William Forbes, brother of Alexander. The title was created in 1633 for Alexander Forbes (d.1636). Scope and Contents From the Series:

James Burnett, Lord Monboddo, was appointed a Senator of the College of Justice in 1767. A large part of the papers consist of his essays, drafts and notes, many of which were used in his books.

Scope and Contents From the Fonds:

The collection consists of manuscripts on a wide variety of subjects, many copied from manuscript or printed works, and chiefly dating from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Among them are some account-books, diaries, and other manuscripts of family interest (including a few concerning the 2nd Earl of Buckinghamshire, father of the 6th Marchioness of Lothian), but very few letters.

The Mure of Caldwell papers are chiefly of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Some of the earlier papers belonged to the Mures of Glanderston, the two families having been united in 1710 by the succession of William, 4th Laird of Glanderston, to the Caldwell estates.
