‘Extracta ex variis chronicis Scotiae’, a transcript made for Walter Macfarlane of Macfarlane, 1738, taken from the original manuscript, Adv.MS.35.6.13, a collection of extracts of chronicles, late 15th century-early 16th century, mostly taken from Fordun and Boece with extensive annotations in the hand of Sir William Sinclair of Roslin.

Scope and Contents

A number of items in the Wodrow collection are in the same hand, and the copyist appears to have worked fairly frequently for Robert Wodrow. Later additions in the original are here collected at the end (page 159) and partially in a different hand, but the copyist breaks off in mid-entry at folio 296 verso of the original. The folio numbers of the original are given in the margin, and the index, which is placed at the beginning in the original, is omitted.

Folios 2-25 are from the Constantinople journals of Henrietta Liston for 1815-1820, and contain material not included in MSS. 5708-5712: Journals of Lady Henrietta Liston. Folios 26-58 are extracts from MS. 5706: Journal of Lady Henrietta Liston kept during travels in Sweden and Denmark, pages 1-72 (1803-1804).

Scope and Contents From the Fonds:

Robert Cadell (1788-1849) was the partner of Archibald Constable, and, after the dissolution of that partnership in 1825, the sole publisher of Walter Scott's novels. His papers reflect his personal and business relations with Scott and other authors, as well as his family affairs.

Material in Latin and English, taken from the `Scotichronicon` for 1057 to 1436, with a supplement (folio 34) for 1199-1263. This was the basis of the early part of Balfour`s ‘Annales of Scotland’. ‘The Scottish historical library’, pages 92-93, refers to this manuscript.(ii) Extracts from ‘Scotorum historiae’ by Hector Boece (folio 39)....

Scope and Contents

There are additions up to 1822 by the copyists David Deuchar, and his son Alexander, the seal-engravers.

The volumes are interleaved with pages engraved with blank shields, some of which have been completed in watercolours or in trick to illustrate the text.

Scope and Contents From the Fonds: The collection covers Alexander Walker's military and administrative service in the East India Company in great detail from circa 1790 to 1801, notably in Malabar and then in Gujarat, where he was Political Resident at Baroda, until he left India in 1810.
