 Subject
Subject Source: Other Source
Scope Note: The English equivalent of the German ‘Tondichtung’, a term adopted by Richard Strauss for his symphonic poems in preference to the previously accepted German term ‘symphonische Dichtung’. It was widely current at the beginning of the 20th century. By implication, if not in actual fact, a tone poem is less dependent on symphonic procedures than a symphonic poem, but the distinction has never been strictly applied.
