The references begin on folio 2, and are preceded by lists of sources inspected (folio 1). The volume is un¬dated, but an event dated 1842 is mentioned at folio 179. A number of leaves containing notes (folios 18, 25-26, 38, 202, 208-209) are bound in, and a bifolium (folios 211-212) found loosely enclosed has been tipped in at the back.

This is a subject index to the first and second parts of the first edition of Stair`s ‘Institutions of the Law of Scotland’ (Edinburgh, 1681), which was not provided with an index, and was presumably compiled before the publication of the second edition in 1693, which did have an index.

The scrapbook contains specimens chiefly of the nineteenth century, including many illustrating the work of the deaf, preceded by a note by Miss Hipkins. Also two crayon portraits by John A Hipkins (pages 60-62); an address given by him on the achievements of the deaf in France (page 71); an original letter of Abbe Sicard (page 79 b); original studies of animals by Walter Geikie (page 84); and original paintings by Frank Maguire (page 90).
