Margaret Anna Dalrymple, Lady Newhailes, was the first wife of Sir David Dalrymple, 2nd Baronet of Newhailes. The daughter of Sir Mark John MacTaggart-Stewart, 1st Baronet of Southwick, Lady Dalrymple was divorced from Sir David in 1919 and married Sir Patrick Graham Blake, 5th Baronet of Langham in 1925. She died in 1962.

Besides being a most prolific writer of fiction (he produced some fifty-six novels), James Grant wrote on the history, particularly military history, of Scotland. He was a keen supporter of the Volunteer Movement in Edinburgh, and founded, in 1852, the National Association for the Vindication of Scottish Rights.

The Braithwaites were a Quaker merchant family from Kendal, friends of Robert Moffat and his son-in-law David Livingstone. One, Joseph Bevan Braithwaite, was a barrister and acted as Livingstone's legal adviser. Livingstone's own letters to him and other members of the family have been dispersed (some are now in MSS. 10768 and 20312). These volumes contain other correspondence and papers, but chiefly concern Livingstone and his letters.
