The notebook includes an introduction to a collection of Edwin Muir’s poems by the 'Poetry Book Society' (folio 3); three of the lectures published in ‘The estate of poetry’, 1962, pages 61-110 (folio 5); and three articles, 'American poetry' (folio 36 verso), 'Dickens' (folio 31 verso) and ‘The ballads' (folio 20 verso).

The paper on the guppy (folio 1) was apparently a lecture given to the Société Française de Génétique, possibly in 1949.

The lecture is undated but appears to have been delivered not very long after 1882, the death of T H Green (MS.20656, folio 12).

Sir Charles Dalrymple Fergusson (1800-1849), was the eldest son of Sir James Fergusson, 4th Baronet of Kilkerran, and Jean, second daughter of Lord Hailes. He inherited Newhailes in 1838 on the death of his aunt, Christian Dalrymple, when he assumed the additional surname of Dalrymple. Sir Charles was admitted Advocate in 1822, and in 1829 married Helen, daughter of David Boyle of Shewalton, Lord President of the Court of Session.
