Scope and Contents From the Sub-Series:

No completely logical arrangement of these books is possible, due to multiple use of the same book, to the existence of the same accounts in draft and final form, and to the fact that in his old age Lord Milton repeatedly revised and extracted old accounts. The basic division into ledgers and other books (subdivided by size) goes back to him. Most are in his own hand, a few (in whole or in part) in those of his clerks. Personal, estate, and professional matters are all included.

Scope and Contents

The accounts were begun ‘by John Millar, Precentor of Uphall and School Master of the Parish, and continued by Ebenezer Faichney, Overseer to the Earl of Buchan'. They relate mainly to the estate of Kirkhill; but they include also some household and personal expenses of the Earl, who passed and signed the accounts, a summary of the enclosures on the estate of Kirkhill, 1780 (folio 26), and a list of the Statute work of the barony (folio 103).

Scope and Contents From the Collection:

Each of the videocassettes has a label on it. There are also labels on both the card sleeve and the plastic outer container. The label on the plastic container has been used to provide the descriptions as it has, generally, fuller information.

Included is an account book, 1918-1922, of George Riddle, shoemaker, Rosehearty.

Ledger kept by a lawyer active in both Aberdeen and Edinburgh.

Scope and Contents

The lawyer can probably be identified as John Gordon of Avochie, Writer to the Signet. His ledger reflects business interests which range over several estates in Aberdeenshire and Banffshire and which include the details of the purchase of a house in West Heriot Row, Edinburgh in 1806.

Ledger kept by Patrick Chalmers, 2nd of Auldbar (died 1824), son of William Chalmers the Gibraltar merchant, while apprenticed to a London merchant., 1755.

Scope and Contents From the Fonds: Auldbar was bought in 1753 by William Chalmers, a Gibraltar merchant whose family had owned land in Aberdeenshire, at Federate and Hazlehead.
