Scope Note: Books of blank or lined paper on which letters to be sent have been written; also manuscript copies of letters, originally on loose sheets, bound together, usually in chronological order. Not to be confused with letterpress copybooks where the copies are created through a mechanical process.

`Registre de la campagne d`Espagne` of General (afterwards Count) Étienne Heudelet de Bierre from 17 December 1808 to 27 September 1809, when it was probably captured at Busaco., 1808-1809.

Scope and Contents

This is in six parts and consists of copies of orders to the troops under his command (the third division of the eighth corps under Junot, and from 2 January 1809, the fifth division of the second corps under Soult), and of letters, many of which are addressed to Soult.

The contents are as follows:

(i) 'Private Letter Book. Vol. I', chiefly written from the Horse Guards and the Crimea, 1850-1855, followed by an index (folio 1);

(ii) 'Crimean Correspondence. Letter Book 5', 1854-1856, preceded by an index (folio 97);

(iii) 'Private Letter Book', Royal Hospital, Dublin, 1860-1865 (folio 167);

The subjects of the letters are the same as in MSS.1847-1854.

Most of the correspondence concerns Donald Macleod's editorship of ‘Good words’, including many letters from contemporary authors and men of letters, with some letters of his brother, Dr Norman Macleod, minister of The Barony parish, Glasgow, and the first editor of ‘Good words’.

Alexander de Forbes (c.1380-1448) was created the 1st Lord Forbes around 1440, the Lords Forbes of Pitsligo were descended from Sir William Forbes, brother of Alexander. The title was created in 1633 for Alexander Forbes (d.1636).
