The first two (folios 1-9) were compiled by Ruthven Todd himself. The rest are drafts, final version and addenda of a finding-list compiled by his son.

The Company, recruited mainly from the Faculty of Advocates, was raised in 1859, as part of the general Volunteer mobilisation in that year. The majority of the papers belong to that and the immediately following years.

From the dates that occur on pages 245 and 421 and intermediate pages, the greater part of the book seems to have been written between 1696 and 1701, but some additions must have been made at least as late as 1702 (see date on page 257).

The letter books contain press-copies of letters similar to those in MSS.789-792. There are two letters of illegible date at the end.

Also included is an additional order of 1753 (folio 35). Besides purely military matters, the orders relate to conduct outside barracks, gaming, drinking, etc. General orders for all three Regiments of Foot Guards, 1751, are given at folio 13. At the end is a list of officers dated 1751 (folio iv).

The volume is dated 1736 and is described on folio 7 as 'made out from the old authentic Rolls of the Shire, particularly that of 1694'.

There is a list of changes made between 1737 and 1748 (folios 36 verso-39 verso) and indexes of parishes and proprietors (folios 3-6).

The cess book incorporates some of the changes made between 1737 and 1748 noted in MS.5440 and notes other changes, the latest in 1749.

The Nisbet papers fall into four groups, belonging respectively to the Nisbets of that Ilk, the original owners of the estate; the Kers (later Carres) of Cavers and West Nisbet; who acquired the estate in 1649; the Chisholmes of that Ilk, connected by marriage to Charles St Clair, 15th Lord Sinclair, who succeeded to the estate some time before 1813; and William Molleson, probably related to the sister of Charles St Clair, de jure 13th Lord Sinclair.

The wording and ornament of the title pages suggest a division into three groups:

(i) Adv.MSS.35.2.5, 35.3.6, 35.3.7, 35.39: 1738-1739.

(ii) Adv.MSS.35.3.2, 35.3.4: 1740.

(iii) Adv.MSS.35.3.3, 35.3.5, 35.3.8: 1740-1744.

The sources are mainly the original manuscripts then in the Advocates` Library, with notes taken from Richard Augustine Hay`s works. Only those documents the present location of whose originals is unknown are indexed in detail.
