Scope and Contents The contents are as follows.(i) Contents list, written last, in a different hand from the rest of the volume (folio 1 verso), and cumulative index of names (folio 2) dated 1469. The first entry for each letter is introduced by an initial in blue or red, alternately.(ii) St Jerome, 'De Viris Illustribus' (folio 13); the text is almost the same as that printed in 'Patrologia Latina', volume xxiii, 602-720, with only a few minor differences of vocabulary and word order....

"Bishop Guthrie`s Observations on the late Rebellion Observed", by Sir James Turner, being critical remarks on the chronicle of the Civil War in Scotland compiled by Henry Guthrie, Bishop of Dunkeld.

Scope and Contents

From the folio references given, Turner appears to have had access to a folio-sized copy of Guthrie`s ‘Memoirs’, possibly even to Guthrie`s holograph manuscript.

Turner`s criticisms, which are based on personal knowledge or experience of the events discussed, were written specifically to rebut a number of allegations made by Guthrie concerning James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Hamilton.

Scope and Contents From the Series:

There are additions up to 1822 by the copyists David Deuchar, and his son Alexander, the seal-engravers.

The volumes are interleaved with pages engraved with blank shields, some of which have been completed in watercolours or in trick to illustrate the text.

Scope and Contents

The blazons are arranged alphabetically under the first letter of the family name, with an appendix at folio 89 verso. Many of the individuals mentioned lived in the late 17th or early 18th centuries.

The signatures of James Norie and Walter Smiton occur on folio 1. These may have been the painters who became burgesses of Edinburgh in 1708 and 1779 respectively.

Scope and Contents From the Series:

MSS.7443-7445 are written in German, having been delivered on George Combe's tour in Germany in 1842.

The phrenological reports (MSS.7452-7455) comprise the phrenological measurements of many persons, both well-known and obscure, with reports and descriptions of their mental capabilities and weaknesses.

The papers of Cecilia Combe contain a selection of literary efforts, diaries of tours, and the usual memoranda and inventories kept by nineteenth-century housewives.

Scope and Contents A Book of Hours written and illuminated in France. Library foliation in pencil: i, 184, ii-iii folios. After the calendar, the text block measures ca. ca. 8 x 5.5 cm and usually comprises 15 lines of text with generous margins all round. The pages are ruled in red, also on the blank folios. `Book of Opinions`, volumes 2 and 3, containing copies of opinions and memorials of English Crown counsel in matters of customs and excise arising in the Exchequer or Treasury.

Scope and Contents

The volumes were copied in July 1751 for John Maule, Baron of the Court of Exchequer in Scotland, from other copies belonging to the Board of Customs in Edinburgh.

The title is laid out like that of a printed book; on the last page are the words, ‘Wrote By William Jackson Junior Writer in Edinburgh, And finished this 31st December, 1742’, It seems, therefore, to be a copy of another manuscript or a printed book.
