Scope and Contents From the Series: Nina, Countess of Minto was the daughter of General Sir Thomas Hislop and granddaughter of Hugh Elliot. Lady Minto's papers reflect her wide ranging interests. She was the author of ‘A memoir of the Right Honourable Hugh Elliot’, of ‘Life and letters of Sir Gilbert Elliot, First Earl of Minto, from 1751-1806’, and of ‘Life and letters of Sir Gilbert Elliot, First Earl of Minto, from 1807-14’. Her papers contain much material relating to these publications and also to her unpublished works....

Scope and Contents

Charles Murray's literary output was almost entirely poetic, and he was widely known as 'Hamewith', the title of his most popular collection, first published in 1900. These papers reflect both his literary work and his early travels in South Africa.

The single poems are arranged in the order in which they appear in Edwin Muir's ‘Collected poems’, 1963. They are followed (folio 80) by 'A Righteous Man' and "The Breaking' (published in the ‘Times Literary Supplement’, 21 December 1979, page 158), ‘The Christmas' (from ‘One foot in eden’, 1956), and pages containing more than one poem and drafts of unidentified works. Finally there is the corrected typescript of 'The Return', a verse drama on the return of Odysseus (folio 99).

Scope and Contents From the Series:

Apart from the plays written specially for radio, such as ‘The Carlin Moth’ and 'As ithers see us', Robert McLellan also wrote a number of short pieces, often as part of a larger series. Many of these were broadcasts for schools. He also contributed to programmes such as 'Scottish Life and Letters', and wrote for television.

The contents are as follows. (i) Manuscript of Act I, entitled 'The Flint and the Flame', undated (folio 1). This is not the version written for broadcasting. (ii) Two typescripts of a version intended for broadcasting, undated (folio 15). The second (folio 56) is heavily corrected and has pencilled remarks by Peggy Morrison. (iii) Annotated typescript of the broadcast, 1954 (folio 90). (iv) Fragments of typescripts, 1952, undated (folio l36).
