Since, in MSS.8599-8603, there are a considerable number of unpublished poems, they have been indicated by an asterisk in the contents lists which Soutar compiled for these volumes.

George MacBeth was inspired to write `Passing Water` by a communication from the donor concerning an incident from their childhood in Shotts, Lanarkshire. With the typescript poem is a covering note from MacBeth, and a letter, 2011, of the donor telling the story behind it.
