Scope and Contents Dr Lachlan Grant MD (1871-1945) was born in Renfrewshire, spent much of his youth in Argyll, and graduated from Edinburgh University in 1896. He took a Diploma in Public Health in 1911 and in 1921 became a Fellow of the Royal Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow. He was Medical Officer for Ballachulish and Kinlochleven, bacteriologist to Argyll County Council and consulting medical officer to British Aluminium, Kinlochleven. A scrapbook of ephemera, news cuttings and photographs, containing information and illustrations of pipers and bagpipes mainly in Scotland, Ireland and Northumberland. Most of the material bears no date, but some items are dated 1929-1932. A copy of James Robertson's 'The Highland Bagpipe' is thought to date from [ca. 1935]. Among the photographs are some of Gilbert Askew himself holding Highland and Northumbrian pipes respectively.

The notebooks serve more as an assortment of information - notes, press cuttings and documentary evidence, such as copies of wills - to be used in the preparation of the specific entries of the dictionary, than as a considered manuscript. In many cases only the heading of the name of the poet has been entered.

None of the volumes has an index.
