The papers consist chiefly of Christopher Murray Grieve’s literary papers, but there is also material relating to his family and affairs.

The portraits have been cut out of larger sheets or sketchbooks and mounted in albums. Most of the sitters are unidentified. In accordance with Charles Kirkpatrick Sharpe's practice (see ‘Letters from and to Charles Kirkpatrick Sharpe’, volume i, pages 21, 40) the heads are completed in watercolours but the rest of the figure and any background are usually only sketched in pencil.

The contents are as follows:
(i) A letter of T G N Haldane and telegrams of congratulation from various people to Mary E Haldane on her ninety-ninth birthday in 1924 (folio 1);
(ii) Press cuttings concerning celebrations marking her hundredth birthday in 1925 (folio 56);
(iii) Telegrams of condolence to her children on her death in 1925 (folio 72).

A small number of items relate to formal and ceremonial occasions at which Aylmer Haldane was present, and to his published writings.
Also pasted in are a few items, 1943, 1945, undated, concerning Haldane’s sister Alice (numbers 164-168), and obituary notices, 1950, of him (numbers 192-194).

The cuttings, collected chiefly through a press-cutting agency, apparently by Richard Haldane, are from British, French and German papers. A few cuttings found loosely enclosed have been pasted in at folios 39 verso-50. Also enclosed are three photographs (folios 2-4) and an invitation card (folio 30). The indexed leaves at the front of the album contain no entries.
