Scope and Contents

Bound in in the latter part of the volume is a copy of ‘A dissertation on the origin and progress of the Scythians or Goths’, which also has numerous marginalia by Macpherson. None of the writings is dated, but folios 8 and 15 are written on sheets watermarked 1810 and 1811.

The additions are tipped in at pages 33, 46, 114, 197, 204, 223, 247 and before and in the tables of kings; and at page 53 of the ‘Dissertation …’.

Scope and Contents Each volume contains Macpherson`s signature on the verso of the title page and numerous marginalia, many of which are quite lengthy, throughout, as well as additional notes and extracts on scraps, and some sheets, of paper tipped in at appropriate places. Additions are tipped-in at pages 3, 13, 43, 49, 69, 71, 93, 182, 195, 245, 263, 295, 353 and at the endpaper.

At folio 15 is a printed list of books for sale, over which Macpherson has written a draft of a letter to David Steuart Erskine, Earl of Buchan (succeeded 1767), and, on the verso, a list of manuscripts and printed works relating to Scottish history.

Macpherson’s signature is on the verso of the title page of each volume, and a number of usually brief marginalia are scattered throughout volume i, and a few more in volume ii, mostly at the beginning. A few undated notes on scraps of paper are tipped in.
