Scope and Contents From the Fonds:

William Soutar's output of work, most of it produced during the last thirteen bed-ridden years of his life, is quite remarkable. Apart from his regular and lively correspondence, and his poetry both in English and in Scots, he left a long sequence of diaries and journals, as well as a record of his dreams extending over more than twenty years.

MSS.7443-7445 are written in German, having been delivered on George Combe's tour in Germany in 1842.

The phrenological reports (MSS.7452-7455) comprise the phrenological measurements of many persons, both well-known and obscure, with reports and descriptions of their mental capabilities and weaknesses.

The papers of Cecilia Combe contain a selection of literary efforts, diaries of tours, and the usual memoranda and inventories kept by nineteenth-century housewives.

This volume containing a collection of pen drawings, with mottoes and verse (chiefly extracts from the Roman poetry) emblematical of death, bears the following title ‘Admodum Reuerendo Patri Jacobo Stratio per Prouinciam Flandro-Belgicam Præposito Prouinciali Tranfactor in Religione vitæ fuæ suinquagefimum annum Deo Opt. Scope and Contents

There are some notes and summaries (folios 84, 204), proper names, and quotations in Latin (passim) in cursive script. A few leaves at the beginning are missing. The shorthand used resembles the system devised by T Metcalfe, (‘Radio-stenography, or short writing’) from which it was probably adapted by the copyist himself.

Scope and Contents

On the whole, the notebooks were used for quotations from English, Italian, Gaelic and Greek writers, as well as for many Gaelic expressions, customs, etc., which William Sharp evidently considered for possible inclusion in his own writings. The notebooks contain lists and arrangements of stories, poems, etc., as well as outlines and rough drafts of particular works.
