About 100 pieces of music, chiefly dances, in French lute tablature., Mid 17th century.
Many of the pieces are by Rene Mésangeau, and the manuscript closely resembles in its binding, watermark, and musical hand, a volume prepared after 1632 possibly for a pupil of Mésangeau and now in the Centre National de Recherche Scientifique in Paris - see ‘Oeuvres de René Mésangeau’ (Paris, 1971) edited by Monique Rollin. Other composers represented include Pinel (allemande, folio 33) and Dubut le père (courante, folio 54).

The manuscript consists of 30 pieces for lute, some dances, some song tunes, mostly Scottish, but including William Basse`s
`Hunter`s Career` (folios 18 verso-19). It includes an introduction giving a history of the original manuscript, some explanation of lute
tablature, and a list of the original contents.
Robert Gordon`s original manuscript is now lost.

Leyden Lyra-Viol Book: a `Copy of the Tunes in Tablature in Doctor John Leyden`s Manuscript Lyra-Viol Book`, transcribed by George Farquhar Graham.
The manuscript includes some details of the history of the original manuscript and a list of its contents. Most of the tunes are Scottish, but composers include Henry Purcell, John Banister, James Hart, William Lawes, and Henry Aldrich.

Composers named are J[ohn] Bannister (whose allemande, courante, and contredanse on folios 2 verso-3 verso also appear in MS.9454, folios 10 verso-11 verso), [Matthew] Locke, [Raphael] Courteville, Clayton, [Louis] Grabu, Baptista [?Lully], [Robert] Smith, and [John] Jenkins.
Parts of this manuscript (e.g. folios 2 verso-4) appear to be in the same hand as MS.9454.
Skene Manuscript: a collection of 117 pieces in tablature for the mandora, apparently compiled by John Skene (? of Hallyards, Midlothian, died 1644).
John Skene`s name appears on pages 1, 45, and 189. The manuscript is divided into eight numbered sections of which two are preceded by directions for tuning the mandora (section III) and the lute (section VII). The music is mainly Scottish, but included are `What if a day` by Thomas Campion (pages 113-114), and `Hunters Carrier` by William Basse (pages 131-132), as well as tunes from several Jacobean masques.
