This series contains manuscripts of, and associated working papers for, Ian Rankin’s PhD thesis on Muriel Spark for the University of Edinburgh. The working papers include extensive research notes, press cuttings, and other research materials collected by Rankin, as well as correspondence and other contact between Rankin and his PhD supervisor. Also included are administrative materials of the University of Edinburgh regarding postgraduate studies.

Scope and Contents From the Fonds:

Robert Paul, manager of the Commercial Bank of Scotland, married Charlotte, the daughter of John Erskine of Cambus, advocate, in 1814. The connection of the Pauls with the Erskines of Alva, and later with the Erskine Murrays, remained strong, and the antiquarian interests of the Reverend Robert Paul, Free Church minister at Dollar, led him to examine many of the Erskine papers. Some of these remained with the Paul’s and now form part of the collection.

Robert McLellan (1907-1985) was born near Lanark and educated at Bearsden and Glasgow University. In 1938 he married and moved to Arran, where he spent the rest of his life, except for a period of service in the Royal Artillery, 1940-1946. His most important literary works were plays, but he also wrote poetry, short stories, and books on Arran.
