The manuscript is in the hand of Robert Mylne, and his initials are recorded on the inside front cover. The latest document is dated 1706, and the manuscript was probably written soon after that date. On the flyleaf a contemporary hand has written `This Book Considering the Valuable Miscellanies therein cannot be sold under ten dollars at least [[ … ]] I.V.G.`

Scope and Contents This is an incomplete version of the Abridgement; another version, Alexander Pope's manuscript of which is preserved in Caithness County Library, was published at Wick in 1866. This abridgement corresponds to pages 1-157 of the 1866 edition; the translation is similar but not the same, the notes are quite different, and there is no Introduction. The handwriting is Pope's, except on pages 11-12, where it is the same as that on pages 113-117 of the Caithness County Library manuscript....

Scope and Contents

The fifth edition of the "Handbook of painting", a translation of Kugler`s "Handbuch der Geschichte der Malerei", was "thoroughly revised and in part rewritten" by Austen Henry Layard. This copy of the handbook would appear to have been used by Layard in his preparation of the fifth edition.

Scope and Contents

Includes observations and anecdotes on contemporary Enlightenment figures including Dugald Stewart, James Boswell, Tobias Smollett and Lord Kames, and an inventory of Fraser Tytler’s publications up to 1793. Also included are copies of letters sent by David Dalrymple (Lord Hailes), and a number of verses by William Shenstone, Allan Ramsay, James Beattie and William Shakespeare translated into Latin by Fraser Tytler.

Scope and Contents

Includes further observations and anecdotes on contemporary Enlightenment figures including Lord Kames, Adam Smith, David Hume, Lord Monboddo and William Robertson. There are extensive extracts of David Dalrymple’s (Lord Hailes) commonplace book and Alexander Carlyle’s autobiography. Several letters and notes on Tytler have been added to the volume after his death. Three printed dedications, including those to Joseph Black and James Beattie, have been tipped in by Tytler.

The copy contains the table of contents, the catalogue of the Kings of Scotland, and Books I-XVII. There is a note in a seventeenth-century hand on folio 1 mentioning that the first twenty leaves of the book are missing. On page 405 is a note of George Paterson, Sheriff Clerk of Haddington, that he made this copy in 1650-1651.

For the period from 3 April 1594 until July 1605 there is a transcript by John Mackinlay, Rothesay, 1821, from the printed edition of Birrel in ‘Fragments of Scottish History’, [edited by J G Dalyell] (Edinburgh, 1798). There is also a note by him on the manuscript (folio i verso) and marginal notes throughout.
