William Marshall, who was factor to the Duke of Gordon, was known in his own day as a Scottish fiddler and composer of strathspeys, and an inventor. The collection contains almost nothing of musical interest, and the largest single part consists of letters and copies of letters of his sons whilst on active service in India and in the Peninsular War, written to him and to other members of the family.

Of the fourteen volumes in the series, twelve are typescript `tour diaries’ with appendices of various documents and printed items, and the remaining two volumes are an address book and an index volume.

Also included is a typescript of Arthur Geddes, 'Reports on Indian cities, 1914-24, and their influence today' (folio 27), and the BBC. script for a memorial broadcast on Patrick Geddes in 1954 (folio 62).

The contents are as follow. (i) Typescripts of articles, 1910-1920, undated (folio 1). The first three, 'The Church and the country-side', 'A Manor House in Brittany' and 'The Day before yesterday' were published in ‘Country Life’, 2 July 1910, 22 May 1920, and 28 August and 11 September 1920. (ii) Manuscript of a sermon, 1941 (folio 44); (iii) Manuscript and typescript poems, ?1914, undated (folio 51).

The manuscripts and typescripts of articles and speeches, 1938-1956, undated, begin on folio 1. The miscellaneous papers, 1938-1954, undated, begin on folio 127. They include a few notes for 'A woman of letters' (folio 144).

The papers appear to have been compiled for the most part between 1945 and 1960.

Includes a letter and typescript lecture of Robert Aylmer Haldane and a script relating to an interview with John Morton Boyd, Director of the Nature Conservancy Council in Scotland.

The letters in the sequence are largely of William Ewart Gladstone to John Murray [III], but there are others to John Murray [II] and John Murray [IV]. There are also assorted letters concerning Gladstone, including some of members of his family, including his wife, Catherine.
