The book appears to have belonged to Katherine Jane Ellice, first wife of Edward Ellice of Invergarry (died 1880), who died in April 1864. Each visitor was asked to sign the book, adding the dates of arrival and departure, his profession, his object in coming and any remarks or complaints.
