Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows.

(i) ‘Reminiscences of a Journey’ to London, 19 May 1840. Murray went from Edinburgh via Glasgow to Liverpool by coach and thence by rail to London, where he visited J R McCulloch, the economist. Pages 35-51 (the end) contain a long account of his friend.

(ii) ‘Personal Narrative, with a collateral account of some eminent and interesting men’ (including Thomas Carlyle), 1849 (other end of the volume, with an alternative version of the beginning at folio 22).
