Scope and Contents From the Sub-Series:

Ruthven Todd was originally commissioned to write the official biography of Dylan Thomas, but failed to do so. These manuscripts are his reminiscences of the poet, which were not published except for chapter 12 which appeared in the ‘Mediterranean Review’, volume i, number 3 (1971), pages 15-23.

Dates: 1963-1964.

Scope and Contents The manuscript, watermarked 1827, was written by Peter Rose who lived circa 1764-1841, a cadet of a family which had a lease of Ardachy, Abertarff, 1726-1770. He spent his working life in the West Indies, retiring to Scotland 1824 or 1825. A cloth label on the inside front cover is inscribed ‘P. Scope and Contents From the Series: Sir David Dalrymple, 3rd Baronet of Hailes, (1726-1792), was the son of Sir James Dalrymple, 2nd Baronet of Hailes, and Lady Christian Dalrymple, daughter of the 6th Earl of Haddington. Sir David was educated at Eton and entered the Inner Temple in 1742. From 1747-1748 he studied Civil Law at Utrecht, and in 1748 was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates.
