Notebook of Charles Hutcheson, Glasgow, a friend of Thomas Chalmers., 1820-1848.
Scope and Contents
This is probably the Charles Hutcheson who owned MS.2731. On folio 1 is inscribed, 'Glasgow 10 April 1820. And added to by extracts from Private Journal, 1838', referring to (i) and (ii) below.
The contents are as follows.
(i) Notes on Radicalism and the Radical troubles of 1819-1820 in the West of Scotland. (Folio 2.)
(ii) 'Extracts from private Journal, 1822 [-1824]. Original to be destroyed.' Chiefly notes of sermons, especially those of the Reverend Dr Thomas Chalmers. (Folio 33.)
(iii) 'Notes of conversation with James Montgomery [the poet] ... Glasgow, 1 Oct. 1841', and brief reminiscences of Thomas Campbell, Charles Kemble, and Sir Walter Scott, (Folio 1 inverted.)
(iv) Notes, with pencil sketches, on the destruction of the tower at the north corner of the west front of Glasgow cathedral, 1848. (Folio 8 inverted.)
