Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows.

(i) Devotions relating to the Passion of Christ, consisting of a meditation on an episode of the Passion, with an appropriate prayer, for each of the canonical hours, namely, matins, from the betrayal of Christ to the mocking before Herod; prime, His appearance before Pilate, the flagellation, etc.; terce, the cry of 'Crucify Him'; sext, the Crucifixion; nones, His death; vespers, the descent from the Cross; compline, the entombment. These are preceded (folio 1) by the Paternoster and other prayers and an exhortation to the reader, especially if a ‘vir religiosus’, to keep the canonical hours and vigils.

(ii) Descriptions of the nine orders of angels, each with an appropriate prayer. (Folio 9 verso).

On folio 1 is a miniature in a square frame, within which is a lozenge frame containing the figure of Christ, enthroned, giving benediction, with the orb in His left hand, between a chalice and the Tables of the Law, against a patterned pink background, with architectural ornament in the top corner. The spaces in the corners of the outer frame contain the symbolic figures of the Evangelists on a gold ground.

Two larger initials on folio 1 contain conventional foliate ornament on a gold ground. Other initials throughout the manuscript are in blue or gold, with red or blue pen-flourishes respectively.

Physical Description

Vellum. Bound in a red morocco binding of the nineteenth century, stamped in gilt with the arms of Emmanuel Jean-Baptiste Fréteau de Pény, Baron of the Empire and Peer of France.
