Scope Note: Paintings on a very small scale. The term is often applied specifically to small scenes in illuminated manuscripts or to portraits on vellum or ivory that were popular in Europe and America from the Renaissance into the 19th century. For paintings in manuscripts, the term "illuminations" may also be appropriate.

Manuscript, apparently of the eighteenth century, containing Book I only (composed AD 1655). Illumination at beginning of Part I (folio 2 verso) and Part II (folio 418 verso). In Part II there are no miniatures, but several pages have been left blank, evidently for receiving them.

Scope and Contents The miniature depicts St Luke writing in his study, the walls of which are enriched with coloured marble and Renaissance decoration.
