Letters of Charles John Vaughan, Dean of Llandaff to Sir Charles Dalrymple, with some letters to, and papers concerning, Dean Vaughan., 1858-1897.
Scope and Contents
Charles Vaughan was Headmaster of Harrow School from 1844-1859. He maintained a regular correspondence with his former pupil, Sir Charles Dalrymple, from 1858 until his death in 1897. There is much in the letters about Dean Vaughan's career; the later years of his Headmastership; as Vicar of Doncaster, 1860-1869, when he began to prepare candidates for ordination; his Mastership of the Temple 1869-1879; and his work as Dean of Llandaff from 1879 until his death. Of some interest is a note in Vaughan's hand explaining his refusal of the Bishopric of Rochester in 1859 (folio 177).
