Scope and Contents

There is an inscription on the inside of the front cover: ‘Evelyn Stewart Murray from A. Lamont April 1890 copied by his cousin – Craigie Edinburgh’ and ‘A. Lamont died in London 1890’.

The contents are as follows.

(i) John MacGregor. Song of 11 double quatrains, beginning ‘Tha mo smaointean diomhair / A direadh le meamnadh’. Headed ‘Oran air Seumas Diuc Adhoill le Iain MacGriogair Bard Ghlinn-Comhuinn. Chaidh an t-oran seo a chur ann clo ann an Dun-Eidinn anns a bhliadhna 1801’. Cf. “Orain gháelach, le Iain Mac Ghrigair”, pages 53-57. (Folios 1-4.)

(ii) John MacGregor. Song of 23 quatrains (the last line repeating the first), beginning ‘An sgeul a chuala mi an de / Mu n Diuc cheannasach threun’. Headed ‘Oran do Cheann-feadhna Adhoill le Iain MacGhriogair Bard Ghlinn-Comhainn 1801’. Cf. “Orain gháelach, le Iain Mac Ghrigair”, pages 81-85. (Folios 5-8.)

(iii) Fear Dhail an Eas, MacDonald. Song of 7 double quatrains, beginning “Gum beil mulad orm fhein / Agus m' inntin gu leile[sic] fo sprochd”. Headed ‘Tearlach Stewart Fear Chail-Bhinne le Gilleasbuig na Ceapaich. Fonn – Mac-talla san Dun’. See also above, MS.14884, folios 7-8. In fact by Fear Dhail an Eas; cf. (iv) Song of 4 triplets, incomplete, beginning ‘Bi muinntir Braigh-Adhoill / Gu tursach an diugh’. Headed ‘Crioman- Orain’. (Folio 11.)

(v) John MacGregor. 5 double quatrains of a song, beginning “Eiridh 'n curaidh flathail sin / 'S fir Adhoill leis gu dlu”. Note at end: ‘Bho oran nam fineachan Gaidhealach le Iain Mac Ghriogair’. Cf. “Orain gháelach, le Iain Mac Ghrigair”, pages 19-28. Out of the 26 stanzas printed there, numbers 5, 12, 7, 18, 8, which concern local clans, are copied here. (Folios 12-13.)

(vi) Donald MacGregor. Song of 11 double quatrains, beginning “'S ro mhuladach neo-adhmhor / Mo charamh s an uair s / An deigh mo leannan fhagail”. Headed “Oran do Chaitreana Mheinn ann an Cois-a-bhile le Domhnull Mac Ghriogair”. (Folios 14-17.)

(vii) Song of 5 stanzas of differing length, beginning “Gur fad na bliadhnachan o n uair/ A dh'eirich gaol nam chridhe dhuit”. Headed ‘Cearban’. (Folios 17-18.)
