Scope and Contents
The letters in this file largely relate to research conducted in the 1930s into a work entitled ‘Unpublished Letters of Lord Byron’ edited by Henry Schultes Schutess-Young. The work was to be published in 1872 by R Bentley, but was pulled from the press following controversy surrounding the ownership of the letters and rights to publish.
The letters have been arranged alphabetically by correspondent surname.
Letters of Richard Bentley to John Murray [V], including copies of letters of George Bentley to Henry Schultess-Young dated 1872 at ff.4-6, and manuscript copies of notices dated 1872, from the ‘Tourquay Directory’ at ff.20-26 and 28-29, 1931-1932: folios 1-29;
Letters of John Murray [V] to Richard Bentley, including a proof sheet for a work by Thomas James Wise at f.35, 1931-1932: ff.30-36;
Letter of John Murray [V] to John Murray [VI] enclosing two printed letters of ‘Richard Gulliable’ (pseudonym of Richard Jennings) to John Carter, 1934: folios 37-40;
Letter of Wilfred Partington to John Murray [V], 1938: folio 41;
Letters of Francis Ernest Williams probably to Richard Bentley (addressed as “Mr Richard”), 1931-1932: folios 42-50;
