The collection is known both as the `Denmilne State Papers` and the `Denmilne Collection`. Less formally it is often referred to as the `Denmilne Manuscripts`.

Scope and Contents Most of the material concerns Arlington in his capacity of Secretary of State, particularly with reference to French and Dutch affairs, and much of it is dated 1669. The correspondence contains letters from foreign statesmen and diplomatists such as the Marquis de Louvois and Baron von Lisola, English politicians such as Sir Richard Temple and Sidney Godolphin, and a number of unsigned letters reporting on events in Europe, probably from Arlington`s agents.
