Scope and Contents From the Fonds:

Robert Sutherland (1909-1981) who wrote under the name 'Robert Garioch', was educated in Edinburgh and, after the war of 1939-1945 when he was a prisoner in Italy and Germany, became a schoolteacher in Kent. He returned to Edinburgh in 1959, where he taught and worked for the School of Scottish Studies in the University.

Carbon typescript of 'The Mystery of Gorbals Terrace', a four act play by Alexander McArthur (1901-1947).

Scope and Contents

The play was originally written in 1944-1945. This typescript contains manuscript corrections by the author, Alexander McArthur and a number of notes stating that a copy sent to Unity Theatre, Glasgow, was not returned, and implying that it was used by Robert McLeish as a source for his 'Gorbals Story'.

The play was first performed in 1937, and a revised version published in 1971. MSS.26335-26336 are annotated acting copies: MS.26335 appears to have been used in several productions (for another similar typescript, see MS.26465). MS.26336 includes the later revisions in manuscript, and MS.26337 is a carbon typescript of the revised version.

Scope and Contents From the Sub-Series:

George Scott-Moncrieff wrote a number of plays, of which only ‘Fotheringhay’ was published (Edinburgh, 1953), although others were performed on the stage or broadcast. Most of the surviving typescripts are undated.

Scope and Contents

This is a copy of MSS.5053-5054 with the leaves arranged differently, in two separate alphabetical sequences, and was the working copy used by the donor, Campbell White, in looking after the collection before Hugh Sharp's death.

Correspondence and papers between Sir James Wordie and the Colonial Office concerning the Inter-departmental Committee regarding Research Ships for Employment in the Dependencies of the Falkland Islands, upon which Wordie was invited to serve., 1922-1923.

Scope and Contents

The papers, which were enclosures with the letters to James Wordie, consist chiefly of minutes of meetings of the Committee and carbon copies of letters of Flannery, Baggalley and Johnson, Ltd., Consulting Engineers, London, to the Chief Engineer, the Crown Agents for the Colonies.

Scope and Contents

The correspondence consists chiefly of letters to Dudley Sommer, with a few drafts and, from 1958, several copies in typescript carbon of his replies. A few transcripts of letters of J S Haldane sent to him during his researches are also enclosed.

Press cuttings containing reviews, some of which give rise to correspondence with reviewers and editors, are contained in the chronological sequence (chiefly May-July 1960).
