The greater part of the correspondence, which is almost entirely political, covers the period of House of Lords reform, when he was Chief Liberal Whip, and the years leading up to it. The correspondence of his political career consists chiefly of incoming letters. That of his life after his resignation (in 1912) consists chiefly of carbon copies of outgoing letters. Notes and reports compiled by him or his correspondents are placed in their chronological location.

Mostly letters of John Layard, with carbon copies of some letters of David Thomson. David Thomson originally contacted Layard in relation to his work on hares, and a close corresponding friendship developed. The file also contains some related letters, including a number concerning an attempt to find suitable accommodation in London for John Layard.

In many sections the inventory approaches a full calendar. It follows the original arrangement of the collection by bundles, the papers of each laird being mostly kept together; the present references have been entered in the margins. A number of errors have been corrected, but no attempt has been made to make it fully accurate.

Journal kept by William Maxwell, managing director of R and R Clark, the Edinburgh printers, on a trip to the United States and Canada in October and November 1932.

The volumes contain carbon copies of diary-letters to a friend in Edinburgh, of which folios 51-65 are duplicated in MS.9759 by the retention of the originals. The journal contains a description of the sea voyage and the social life of his tour, but is notable for its detailed descriptions of visits to printing houses, particularly Donnelley's of Chicago (MS.9759, folios 51-65) and the Government Printing Office, Washington (MS.9760, folios 1-29).
