The Edinburgh Harmonists’ Society was founded in 1822 as the direct successor to the Catch Club and thereby of the Edinburgh Musical Society which began in 1728. It continued until 1950, when it became part of the Edinburgh Musical Society to which it transferred its papers and above all its valuable library, much of which had belonged to the Catch Club.

Scope and Contents From the Fonds: The papers cover six centuries worth of family and estate papers of the Forbes, the Stuart Forbes, and the Trefusis families. Alexander de Forbes (c.1380-1448) was created the 1st Lord Forbes around 1440, the Lords Forbes of Pitsligo were descended from Sir William Forbes, brother of Alexander. Scope and Contents From the File: A former Cromwellian Colonel, Sir James Stansfield settled in Scotland after the Restoration. At first, he lived in Edinburgh, where he became a prosperous merchant. Later, he purchased Newmills (subsequently Amisfield) in Haddington, where he was founder of the Newmills Cloth Manufactory. As a wealthy man, he was able to 'accomodate' a number of needy people, notably Alexander Seton, 1st Viscount Kingston, whose affairs are well represented here. The papers contain the lawsuit in which the tutors of James George, 7th Duke of Hamilton, contested on his behalf the claim of Archibald James Edward Douglas, son of Lady Jane Douglas Stuart, to the lands of the Douglas family. Andrew Stuart acted as agent for the Hamilton claimant, and played an active part both in France and in Britain in the preparation and presentation of the Hamilton Case.
