Album labelled, 'Letters &c. from 1791 to 1796 from George Ellis, Esq., to his [half-] sister Elizabeth Lindsay, afterwards Mrs. Schutz', but really a commonplace-book, containing poems, riddles, etc., of Ellis and others., 1791-1796.
Poems ascribed to George Ellis occur on folios 16 verso-20, 28 verso-39 verso. A list of letters of Ellis to Miss Lindsay, found loose, has been pasted on to folio 1. The name 'E. Lindsay' appears on folio ii verso and that of 'Aug. Schutz' on folio 26 verso.

The collection includes a detailed family history and genealogy composed by Ralph Willison Simmonds (Edinburgh 1989), detailed transcripts and a booklet with historical notes: The Willisons of South Lanarkshire (Edinburgh, 1994), also by Mr Willison - see Acc.11049/1 and Acc.11049/76.

MSS.9447-9458 consist of Scottish and English music, and French lute music, all dating from before 1675. MSS.9459-9469 consist of French music brought to Scotland by James and Harie Maule after their visits to France between 1678 and 1683. MSS.9470-9475 are opera scores and parts acquired by James Maule when in exile in Italy after the 1715 rising.

The collection consists of manuscripts on a wide variety of subjects, many copied from manuscript or printed works, and chiefly dating from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Among them are some account-books, diaries, and other manuscripts of family interest (including a few concerning the 2nd Earl of Buckinghamshire, father of the 6th Marchioness of Lothian), but very few letters.

The contents include ‘Miscellanea’ (folios 3, 96); ‘Metaphysique’ (folio 14); characteristics of European countries (folio 22); medical and cookery recipes (folios 49, 93). On folio 1 is written in a 17th century hand: ‘Je apartien a monsieur Hopton gentlehomme anglois demeurant a Kentwell Sufk cadet’.

William Clydesdale was a Glasgow character and a fellow student of Thomas Muir, the political reformer (note inside front cover).
The commonplace book contains satirical, comic, and reflective verses by Clydesdale in Scots and English, some dated 1823, a few anecdotes, and annotations by Peter Mackenzie, author of ‘The life of Thomas Muir’ (Glasgow, 1831).
