Born in Inveraray, Neil Munro became a journalist in Glasgow, rising to the post of editor of the ‘Glasgow Evening News’. His papers consist largely of manuscripts of his novels and short stories, though some of his newspaper articles are represented by presscuttings.

Scope and Contents From the Series: Sir Charles Dalrymple (1839-1916), formerly Fergusson, was the youngest son of Sir Charles Dalrymple Fergusson, 5th Baronet, of Kilkerran. He succeeded to the estates of Hailes on the death of his father in 1849, when he assumed the name of Dalrymple. He was created a baronet in 1887, and a Privy Councillor in 1905. Scope and Contents From the Series:

Dr Irvine trained as a surgeon at Aberdeen before seeing wartime service in Africa with the Royal Army Medical Corps from 1917-1919. In 1919, he was appointed medical missionary to the new Church of Scotland mission to Chogoria. He took up his post in 1922 and remained at Chogoria until his retirement in 1961. He was ordained in 1933 and died in Nairobi in 1974.

The photographs, films and papers represent Dr Irvine's working and family life.

Scope and Contents From the Sub-Series: The papers chiefly refer to James Stuart's stay in India as an officer (later Commander-in-Chief) of the forces of the East India Company based at Fort St George (Madras). The most detailed portions of the papers cover the year immediately prior to Stuart's dismissal from the Company's service in 1783. Robert Sutherland (1909-1981) who wrote under the name 'Robert Garioch', was educated in Edinburgh and, after the war of 1939-1945 when he was a prisoner in Italy and Germany, became a schoolteacher in Kent. He returned to Edinburgh in 1959, where he taught and worked for the School of Scottish Studies in the University.
