"General index to the music of the Edinburgh Harmonists' Society", compiled by Joseph Ebsworth, the Society's librarian., 1841.
The index lists all the collections of part songs owned by the Edinburgh Harmonists’ Society, and then provides an alphabetical index of each song, noting its type, the number of voices it requires, its composer, and the collection in which it is to be found. There appear to be no later additions. Much of this music was inherited from the Catch Club.

The volume contains an index of sportsmen taking part in the shoots (folios 89) compiled by Edward Charles Ellice of Invergarry. Ellice was probably responsible for pasting the many drawings by Katherine Jane Ellice and several by Edwin Landseer (including an illustrated letter (folios 26-29)) and other guests (which appear to have been cut out of a sketch-book) on blank leaves cut out from the book and tipped in elsewhere throughout the volume.

References on folios 41 and 81 show that the manuscript was written in 1840. More recent additions in another hand are made at intervals, one on folio 48 verso referring to a date in 1860. There are indexes on folios 138-143.

As well as the text as published, it includes part of two chapters which were excised: 'The Condition of Scotland today' (folio 680) and 'My Best Friends' (folio 719). Much of the latter was later published in ‘Francis George Scott: an essay’ (Edinburgh, 1955). The versos of folios 323-400 passim have been used to compile an index.
