The contents of the manuscript are as follows:
(i) `Historia plantarum in horto regio Parisiensi`, late 17th century (folio 1). A list of plants, followed (folio 275) by a list of the trees and shrubs. They are closely related to Joseph Pitton de Tournefort`s Schola Botanica (Amsterdam, 1689), but are not as full.
(ii) `Methodus plantarum secundum D.D. Turnefortij principia Adornata`, dated at Paris, 14 April 1696 (folio 305).

The writer’s mother was Margaret, daughter of James Cheape, 1st of Rossie, and he married his cousin Isabella, daughter of Henry Cheape, 2nd of Rossie.
At folio 2 is an account of the last words, mainly biographical, of a dying lady, following a leaf inscribed 'Memoria D. Annae Lesleae'. There is a list of ladies' garments at folio 17. At the end the writer speaks of his conduct in the matter of private religion (inverted folio 1).
Mess book of the Edinburgh Squadron of the Royal Midlothian Yeomanry Cavalry.
The mess book consists of the printed 'Mess Regulations' for each year, names of ‘Strangers’ and ‘Guests’ and by whom invited, and ‘names of troopers absent from Mess’.
