Scope and Contents From the Series: James Augustus Grant joined the Bengal Army in 1848 and was at the siege of Multan, the battle of Gujerat, and the relief of Lucknow. From 1860 to 1863 he was seconded to the Royal Geographical Society's expedition under John Hanning Speke, when the source of the Nile was identified and Uganda and southern Sudan visited.
