The Barnton Fire-Fighting Parties provided a trained fire-fighting force to combat any fire emergency caused in the area by enemy action. The scheme was primarily a duty of home defence and self defence.

The Edinburgh Skating Club was clearly well-established in 1784 when the first minute book starts. Apart from a few years of inactivity the Club flourished until the early 1900's when combined figure-skating declined in popularity. It was finally dissolved in 1966.
